UNION: A Trust Minimized Bridge for Bitcoin

The blockchain ecosystem has long struggled with a fundamental challenge: how to enable seamless, secure asset transfers between different blockchain networks.

Rootstock has been the leader in tackling these challenges ever since its launch in 2018 and the introduction of the PowPeg. And to this day, POWPeg remains the most unstoppable, uncensorable, and unbreakable Bitcoin bridge in existence.

Building on that legacy, the UNION Bridge has been designed to be a next-generation Bitcoin bridge capable of securing nation-state scale asset pools, bringing millions of BTC into active use at a scale that underpins massive levels of global economic activity.

Dig into the full whitepaper here.

In this article, we explore in simple terms what the UNION bridge is, how it works, and why it’s important for the Bitcoin community.

The POWPeg: Best-in-class Bitcoin bridging

In operation since 2018, Rootstock’s POWPeg uses Bitcoin’s proof-of-work and hardware security modules (HSMs) to create a secure, decentralized two-way bridge between Bitcoin and the Rootstock sidechain. PowPeg uses a Defence in Depth approach to security. It relies on multiple technologies such as merged mining to ensure that no single entity controls the bridge, setting a high benchmark for Bitcoin bridging.

What is UNION and how does it work

UNION sets the stage for an additional secure and efficient way to move BTC into Rootstock, the longest-running and leading Bitcoin sidechain. Once bridged into Rootstock, BTC becomes rBTC where it can be used to build, deploy, and interact with smart contracts and decentralized applications secured by the Bitcoin network.

UNION introduces key innovations to the model including:

  • 1-of-N Honest Assumption:

Union moves from an m-of-n honesty model to a more decentralized 1-of-n assumption. Basically, the Union Bridge requires only one honest functionary to guarantee security, significantly reducing trust requirements.

  • Improved Decentralization

The security of the Union Bridge relies on functionaries instead of pegnatories, making it possible for these roles to be open to a wider pool. The fact that anyone can become a functionary ensures a higher degree of decentralization.

  • Capital Efficiency

With a packet-based architecture, Union Bridge optimizes the use of security deposits, enabling multiple bridge operations to share resources and scale efficiently.

  • Faster Dispute Resolution

The UNION bridge introduces a new concept; The Bitcoin Chess Clock. This is a mechanism to count the total amount of time spent by a party to publish all its messages, softening the need to use static time-locks. Compared to the original BitVMX design, UNION optimizes the process, via the clock, to resolve disputes quickly and fairly.

UNION will supercharge the growth of a decentralized financial system built on Bitcoin, allowing millions of BTC to flow in and out of Rootstock in an efficient, secure, and permissionless manner, all without compromising Bitcoin’s core principles.

Combined with Rootstock’s EVM compatibility, its diverse developer tool support including Alchemy and Gelato, integrations with leading multichain applications, and the decentralized governance, grants, and rewards provided by the RootstockCollective DAO, the UNION bridge will ensure that Rootstock remains the home of DeFi on Bitcoin for decades to come.

Stay in the know

For developers and enthusiasts watching the Web3 space, UNION is a project worth studying closely. It represents the kind of innovative thinking that continues to push blockchain technology forward.

Bridging Without Blind Trust: How PowPeg Inherits Bitcoin’s Security Model

Billions of dollars in Bitcoin are sitting idle. For years, holders looking for on-chain yield or DeFi access have relied on wrapped BTC products and trusted custodians to keep their assets safe. History has shown how fragile that model can be. When custodians fail or validators act together, users lose funds and the security that […]

Midas Integrates with Rootstock to Expand BTC Treasury Strategies

As Bitcoin adoption continues to grow, so does the demand for infrastructure that allows BTC to be used productively without departing from Bitcoin’s core security and trust assumptions. Rootstock was created to extend Bitcoin’s proof-of-work security into a fully EVM-compatible smart contract environment. Today, we’re highlighting the integration of Midas on Rootstock, bringing mHyperBTC to […]
